Crawford's Hot Shooting Leads Benedict Over Kentucky State

Andrew Crawford
Box Score COLUMBIA, S.C. – Andrew Crawford scored 22 of his 24 points after halftime to help lead the Benedict College Tigers to a 78-73 overtime victory over the Kentucky State Thorobreds on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.

Crawford tied the game in regulation with a 3-pointer with 26 seconds left, then Jose Roman-Angueira blocked Ulysses Thomas' last-second jumper to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Tigers scored the first seven points of the extra period to secure the win. Benedict improves to 10-3 overall and remains undefeated in the SIAC at 5-0. Kentucky State drops to 2-8 overall and 1-4 in the SIAC.

The Tigers trailed by six points, 63-57, with 3:30 left to play in regulation, when Allen Elmore hit a 3-pointer with 3:14 on the clock. Lynden Davis blocked a layup attempt by Ulysses Thomas and Lamar Adkins hit one free throw, and then tied the game at 63 with a layup with 2:38 left to play.

Brandon Darrett, who led Kentucky State with 20 points, put the Thorobreds back on top by hitting one of two free throws. A layup by Darquell Pulliam gave Kentucky State a 66-63 lead with 45 seconds left. The Tigers worked to get Crawford open off a screen and he drilled the 3-pointer to tie the game.

"Those shots were huge, and much needed needless to say, but he's been doing that all year," Benedict coach Fred Watson said about Crawford. "He was struggling in the first half and we told him he was rushing his shot but to be patient, the shots were going to come. I had to do a better job of freeing him up in the second half and getting him some open looks."

Roman-Angueira hit two free throws to open the overtime period, Kareem Ransom followed with a 3-pointer and Brennan Reynard drove to the basket for a layup to give the Tigers a 73-66 lead. Kentucky State cut the lead to 76-73 on a 3-pointer by Pulliam with 13 seconds left. Benedict turned the ball over, but Pulliam missed a 3-point attempt to try and tie the game. Reynard hit two free throws with three seconds left for the final margin.

Kentucky State led most of the first half and had a 30-26 lead at the break as the Tigers shot just 26.7 percent in the first half. Benedict shot 50 percent in the second half, and Crawford hit seven of eight 3-point attempts.

"Coming out of the gate, we just didn't have our usual energy," Watson said. "So we made it a much tougher game than it should have been. Down the stretch, we really started to dig down. Down the stretch we started playing Benedict defense."

Lamar Adkins added 13 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers, while Reynard also had 13 points. Justin Peeples chipped in 10 points.

The Tigers are back at home on Thursday to play Tuskegee at 7:30 p.m.
