Tigers Edge LeMoyne-Owen To Advance In SIAC Tournament

Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Lamar Adkins had 22 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots to help lead the Benedict College Tigers to a 64-61 overtime victory over LeMoyne-Owen College on Monday night at the Bill Harris Arena.

Benedict, the tournament's No. 5 seed on the East and the tournament's two-time defending champions, advance to face Fort Valley State, the East's No. 1 seed, at 3:15 on Wednesday. The Tigers improved to 17-10 overall.

LeMoyne-Owen's Denzel McDaniel made one of two free throws with seven seconds left in regulation to tie the game. Benedict attempted a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer by Deonte Johnson, which fell short.

In overtime, Adkins hit two free throws and Johnson had a dunk on a breakaway to give the Tigers a 57-53 lead. The Magicians cut the lead to two on a pair of free throws, then Andrew Crawford hit a 3-pointer and Brennan Reynard scored a layup to give the Tigers a 62-55 lead with 1:08 to play.

LeMoyne-Owen cut the lead to 62-61 with 38 seconds left. Benedict wanted to run time off the clock, but turned the ball over on a shot-clock violation with three seconds left. The Magicians were trying to rush the ball up the court but turned it over to Benedict. Adkins then sealed the game with two free throws with four-tenths of a second left.

Crawford added 16 points for the Tigers, while Deonte Johnson added 10 points.

LeMoyne-Owen placed five players in double-figures, led by Daequan Mitchell-Fie with 13 points, while Marcel Hawkins, Timothy Ware and Jerry Hampton all had 11 points. The bigger Magicians out-rebounded the Tigers 50-35.

Benedict had as much as a 12-point lead, 26-14, but LeMoyne-Owen cut the lead to 32-28 at the half.

The second half was tight, with neither team holding more than a three-point lead over the final 13:58 of the game.
