COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College women's tennis team swept all three doubles matches to blank Tuskegee University, 5-0, and advance to the finals of the 2015 SIAC Women's Tennis Championship at the Columbia Tennis Center.
Benedict will take on Stillman College, the defending SIAC champions, at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Columbia Tennis Center. Stillman defeated Clark Atlanta 5-2 in the other women's semifinal match.
In their one previous meeting this season, Benedict beat Tuskegee 5-4 in a close contest. On Friday, the Lady Tigers swept all three doubles to take a big 3-0 lead. At No. 1 doubles, the team of
Esther Zelaya and
Daniella Rios downed Tuskegee's duo of Reicia North and Kimberly Bowen, 8-2. The No. 3 team of
Juliet Campbell and
Adrienne Milow avenged their regular-season loss and beat Tuskegee's team of Taylor Wilson and Kayla Triche, 8-3. At No. 2 doubles, Benedict's
Karla Flores and
Belinda Camacho pulled out a hard-fought 8-6 victory over Tuskegee's Navilla Paul and Cherly Dixon.
Benedict needed just two victories in singles action, and got one step closer when Zeleya cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Bowen in the No. 2 slot. Rios had a 6-1 victory over Paul after the first set, then edged out a 7-5 victory in the second set to clinch the match, and the other matches still on the court were pulled off.
Benedict improves to 15-7 overall.
Benedict lost both regular season matches to Stillman this season. In the first meeting, in Columbia, Stillman edged Benedict 5-4. Stillman won 7-2 in the other meeting in Memphis, Tenn.
