COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College women's tennis team went 6-1 at the first SIAC Tennis Roundup, held Thursday through Saturday.
After picking up wins over Spring Hill and Fort Valley State on Thursday, the Lady Tigers beat LeMoyne-Owen, Clark Atlanta and Lane on Friday. On Saturday, Benedict lost a close 5-4 match to Tuskegee before finishing the roundup with a 7-0 win over Albany State.
The match against Tuskegee was a rematch of last year's SIAC Championship. Benedict opened the match by winning two doubles matches for a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. Tuskegee won the No. 1 singles in a tiebreaker with Reicia North beating Karla Flores 6-4, 0-6, 10-8. Tuskegee also picked up a point at No. 6 singles with another match that went to a tiebreaker as Kori Quillin beating Adrienne Milow 6-2, 1-6, 10-2. The No. 2 singles match was also a close call, with Tuskegee's Monica Thomas edging Victoria Izakova 6-3, 7-6 (5-0).
Daniella Rios and Danyelle Copeland picked up singles victories against Tuskegee.
Benedict closed out the roundup with a 7-0 victory over Albany State. Benedict swept the doubles matches and picked up singles wins by Flores, Copleland, Juliet Campbell and Adrienne Milow.
Against Clark Atlanta on Friday, Benedict won two of the three doubles matches, then won straight-set singles victories by Flores, Izakova, Rios, Copeland and Milow.
Benedict improves to 8-4 overall and 6-1 in the SIAC.
The Lady Tigers are back in action next Saturday, hosting Johnson C. Smith in a non-conference matchup.
