JACKSON, Tenn. – The Benedict College football team will be looking to start its first winning streak of the season on Saturday, taking on the Lane College Dragons at 2 p.m. at Lane Field in Jackson, Tenn.
The Tigers (1-7 overall, 1-4 SIAC) are coming off their first win of the season, a 31-7 victory over Clark Atlanta last week. The Dragons (3-6 overall, 1-4 SIAC) snapped a five-game losing streak of their own last week with a 36-10 victory over Central State. The game will be video streamed
here.
"It was definitely a good weekend for us. I hope we can keep the momentum going," said Benedict head coach
Mike White.
Benedict rushed for 214 yards last week against Clark Atlanta, and White is hoping the Tigers can continue with a strong ground attack. Defensively, Benedict held the Panthers to 208 yards of total offense and rank fourth in the conference and 23
rd nationally in total defense.
"We're hoping we can be consistent as a football team and execute in the run game," White said. "This is definitely a tougher defense. I think this is their last home game, so they're going to be fighting us extra hard, so we're going to have to play extra well to be successful."
The Dragons have a strong passing attack with quarterback Tarik McKinzie, who leads the SIAC and is 17
th nationally in passing efficiency. His top target is Anthony Evelyn, who leads the SIAC in receptions and receiving yards.
"They've got playmakers," White said. "They've got the leading receiver in the conference and a quarterback who can scramble and make plays. They've got a big running back. They've got offensive weapons and they're going to cause us issues on defense. We haven't played well on the road, so that would be great to go up there and play well on Saturday."
After getting their initial win last week, the Tigers are now focusing on finishing up the 2019 season with a winning streak.
"It's very important that we continue to play and try to be consistent in the way we played last Saturday and see if we can do it again," White said. "I think that's huge going into the offseason. It's just a disappointing season, but it sets us off in a positive direction if we can finish the season on a positive note."
The Tigers hope to continue that positive momentum for another week. Benedict has added an extra home game to the schedule, and will host Kentucky State on Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. in Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.
