Benedict Women's Track Team Wins Savannah Orange And Blue Classic

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Benedict College women's track & field opened its outdoor schedule by winning the Orange and Blue Classic meet over the weekend at Savannah State University.

The Lady Tigers finished first among eight schools represented with 153 points. Clayton State finished second with 123 points, while Albany State was third with 105 points. Host Savannah State finished fourth (68 points), followed by Edward Waters (63), Kentucky State (47.5), Allen (12.5) and Florida Memorial (7).

Johnelle Johnson broke the Benedict school record in the women's discus, throwing an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark of 47.75 meters (150 feet, 1 inch). She won the event and her throw moved her into first place in the SIAC, South Region and fourth in Division II. She also competed in the shot put and finished second with a mark of 12 meters (39 feet, 4 ½ inches). She also finished seventh in the hammer throw with a mark of 32.6 meters (106 feet, 11 inches).

Stellah Kiptui broke two school records, winning both the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:43.92, and the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:20.91.

Kimone Reid finished second in the discus throw with a season-best throw of 41.58 meters (136 feet, 5 inches). She also finished third in the javelin with a throw of 28.05 meters (92 feet). She also finished fourth in the shot put with a season-best throw of 11.61 meters (38 feet 1 ¼ inches).

Sherona Stewart finished second in the 800-meter run with a season-best time of 2:25.53, while Eilika Lane finished third with a time of 2:25.72 and teammate Becky Dionisio finished fourth with a 2:27.12. Steward also finished fourth overall in 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:02.16.

Shantel Williams ran the fastest time in the SIAC in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.35. She also ran a season-best time of 25.90 in the 200-meter dash to finish seventh overall. 

Shamia Colden-Burson finished fifth in the hammer throw with a season-best mark of 33.23 meters (109 feet), and sixth in the shot put with a mark of 10.98 meters (36 feet, ¼ inch).

Kristion Jeffries had one of her best performances ever with a fourth-place finish and a personal best in the triple jump of 11.07 meters (36 feet, 4 inches). She also finished third in the high jump with 1.54 meters (5 feet ½ inch). She also finished 11th in the long jump with a personal best of 5.02 meters (16 feet, 5 ¾ inches).

Kassie Jordan tied with Jeffries in the high jump at 1.54 meters (5 feet ½ inch). She also finished ninth overall in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.69 and ran a season-best time in the 100-meter dash with a 12.95.

Savionna Glover finished sixth overall in the long jump with a season-best of 5.22 meters (17 feet 1 ½ inch).

Cherish Ross finished seventh in the long jump with a jump of 5.21 meters (17 feet, 1 ¼ inches). She also ran the 100-meters in 13.27.

Brittaney Orr jumped her season best in the long jump with a mark of 5.16 meters (16 feet, 11 ¼ inches), and finished seventh. 

Charneycar Casimir finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.58, while teammate Helcy-Ann Sauver finished fifth with a time of 1:02.27.

The women's 4x100-meter relay team (Lane, Williams, Ross, Jordan) finished third overall with a season-best time of 50.43.

The women's 4x400-meter relay team (Casmir, Jordan, Ross, Jeffries) also finished third with a season-best time of 4:11.70.

Benedict will next compete in the Charleston Southern Invitational on March 20-21.
