Tigers Win Savannah State Eye Opener Meet

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Benedict College men's track & field team opened the outdoor season by winning the Savannah State Eye Opener meet on Saturday, thanks to three first-place finishes and several other strong performances.

Joshua Brimmer threw a personal best in the hammer throw to win the event with a mark of 42.04 meters (137 feet, 11 inches). He also finished third in the discus throw (38.19 meters, 125 feet, 3 inches), and fourth in the shot put (11.57 meters, 37 feet, 11 inches).

Bryce Ravenell finished first in the high jump with a season-best performance of 2.02 meters (6 feet 7 inches). He also placed fourth in the long jump at 6.85 meters (22 feet, 5 inches).

Richard McQueen finished first in the javelin throw with a personal-best mark of 36.80 meters (120 feet, 9 inches). Corey Witter was second with 33.22 meters (109 feet).

Shemar Miller finished second in the long jump with a jump of 6.91 meters (22 feet, 8 inches). Shun Taylor finished fifth with a jump of 6.75 meters (22 feet, 1 inch).

On the track, Josiah Atkins ran a season-best time of 11.22 in the 100-meter dash into a - 3.2 headwind and finished second.

Kevin Francis finished second in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 15.77. Chase Cohee finished sixth in the event with a time of 18.03, while Witter finished seventh with a time of 18.10.

Japheth Kipruto finished third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:18.10.

The men's 4x100-meter relay B team of Shun Taylor, Bryce Ravenell, Richard McQueen and Shemar Miller finished second with a time of 43.21. The A team of Andre Smith, Kevin Francis, Josiah Atkins and Philip Jackson finished third with a time of 43.63.

Benedict topped the 10-team field with 132 points, easily beating second-place Clayton State (103) and third-place and host Savannah State (101). The rest of the field was Albany State (81), Piedmont (67), Edward Waters (57), Bryant & Stratton (55), Francis Marion (19), Morris (8) and USC Beaufort (6).
