CHARLOTTE – The Benedict College men's outdoor track and field team opened up the outdoor portion of their schedule over the weekend at the Charlotte 49er Invitational at the University of Charlotte, and made a statement in their first outdoor meet of the season, setting one school record and several personal bests.
Donald Kibet smashed the Benedict school record in the 5,000-meter run, running 14:38.76 in the rain and cold to win the event. Kibet also won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:32.15.
Rajaun Ricketts finished second overall in a field loaded with Division I athletes in the triple jump with a jump of 14.85 meters (48 feet, 8 ¾ inches). That currently ranks fourth in NCAA Division II. He also finished eighth in the long jump with a jump of 6.94 meters (22 feet, 9 ¼ inches).
Shun Taylor finished seventh in the long jump with a personal-best mark of 6.96 meters (22 feet, 10 inches), which ranks 18
th in NCAA Division II.
Both
Sergio White and
Quincy Harris set personal records in the 400-meter run. White ran a 49.86 to eighth, one spot behind teammate
Matthew Paul (49.52), while Harris ran a 50.72 to finish 19
th in a field of 80.
Chase Ransom set a personal record in the hammer throw with a throw of 42.78 meters (140 feet, 4 inches), to finish 13
th.
Makel Bridges set a personal record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.07 to finish 16
th in a field of 92.
Andy Ferguson set a personal record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.24.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team, consisting of
Sergio White,
Matthew Paul,
Devonta Newbold and
Quincy Harris finished off the impressive weekend with a time of 3:17.43 to finish third overall.
The Tigers are back in action on the track this Friday and Saturday at the Weems Baskin Invitational at the University of South Carolina and Cregger Track.
