Benedict's Miller Looking To Claim Another National Championship

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Benedict College's only NCAA national champion will be going for a second national title this weekend.

Shemar Miller, who won the triple jump event at the 2021 NCAA Division II outdoor track and field national championship, will be competing in this weekend's indoor track and field championship at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.

Miller enters the national championship ranked sixth in the nation in the triple jump out of the 16 entrants. Miller's best performance this indoor season was a jump of 15.54 meters (51 feet, 0 inches) at the South Carolina Invitational on Feb. 3. The top-ranked jumper in the event is Papay Glaywulu from Adams State, who has jumped 16.61 meters (54 feet, 6 inches). Miller won the 2021 outdoor championship with a jump of 15.79 meters (51 feet, 9 ¾ inches).

Miller said he is more prepared and confident heading into this national championship than the 2021 outdoor meet.

"I'm feeling good. I feel like I've done enough preparation. I'm actually excited and just plan to go out there and have some fun," said Miller.

"Actually, I feel more confident going into this one. I've been there, and I know what it takes, and I know what I have to do. I'm just going to go out there and execute and do what I've been training for."

Miller said words can't describe what it would be like to win another national championship.

"That's a prize right there. If I can win this one, and have one indoor and one outdoor, wow, I don't know," he said. "I don't know how I'd feel about that. I just have to hope and see and when I do, I'll see how I feel. Right now, I don't have the words to describe it."

Miller said he is peaking at the right time, and is healthy and ready to jump.

"I'm healthy. We got done unloading and I'm starting to feel the weight coming off. I'm feeling good and feeling ready," Miller said.

The biggest difference between jumping indoors and outdoors is dealing with wind and other outdoor elements. That is why it is so important to have the perfect runway timing.

"The preparation is not that much different. In indoor, you just don't have the wind, so you have to be more consistent on the runway, and I think we've got that down," Miller said.

The men's triple jump event is scheduled to start at 4:05 p.m. on Saturday. The NCAA will live stream the championship at ncaa.com
