ATLANTA, Ga. – The Benedict College women's track & field team took the early lead in the 2023 Cricket SIAC Championship on Thursday at Morehouse College's Edwin T. Moses Track.
The Lady Tigers earned 30 points on the first day of events. Lane is in second with 19 points, while Clark Atlanta earned 16 points.
Benedict dominated the final event of the first day, the 10,000-meter run.
Purity Kibet won the race with a time of 41:35.33, while teammate
Floma Okumu was second with a time of 42:00.03.
Jane Kiborus finished sixth with a time of 45:14.61 to give Benedict 21 total points in that event.
In the shot put,
Yassmine Chambers finished third with a mark of 11.92 meters (39 feet, 1 ¼ inches), while
Paris Stanton finished sixth with a mark of 11.5 meters (37 feet, 8 ¾ inches) to give Benedict a total of nine points.
Benedict did not score in the long jump, the other final event on Thursday.
Preliminary heats in four track events were also completed: The 400-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash, 800-meter run and 4x100-meter relay.
Friday's schedule continues with the finals of the women's hammer throw, women's triple jump, women's discus, women's pole vault, and 3,000-meter steeplechase. Preliminary heats will be held in the 100-meter hurdles, 1,500-meter run, 100-meter dash, 400-meter run, and 4x400-meter relay, as well as the final day of the women's heptathlon.
