COLUMBIA, S.C. – For the Benedict College Lady Tigers, Saturday's game against Fort Valley State University started out bad and only got worse.
Fort Valley's tenacious, ball-hawking defense completely smothered the Lady Tigers and cruised to a 95-49 victory that ranks as one of the all-time most lopsided losses in Benedict history.
The loss snapped Benedict's seven-game winning streak. Despite the loss, the Lady Tigers remain in first place in the SIAC with a 7-1 conference record and 8-2 overall record. Fort Valley State improved to 10-4 overall and 8-2 in the SIAC.

Monique Weathers with 15:22 left in the first half cut Fort Valley's lead to 16-12. But the Lady Wildcats went on a 13-2 run to take a 29-14 lead and Benedict never challenged again. Fort Valley consistently forced turnovers with its pressure defense, limiting Benedict's offensive chances. The Lady Tigers had just 19 field goal attempts in the first half, making only five shots for 26.3 percent shooting. Fort Valley, on the other hand, made 20 field goals on 36 attempts in the first half for 55.6 percent.
After a layup by Weathers with 12:30 left in the first half made it 23-14, Benedict did not score another field goal until 16:38 left in the second half, a span of nearly 16 minutes on the clock. Fort Valley scored the final 23 points of the first half and took a 54-19 lead into the locker room.
Fort Valley had 21 steals in the game and scored 32 points off turnovers. Benedict had a season-high 29 turnovers.
Santera Grooms led Benedict with 11 points.
Shytina Harley led Fort Valley State with 15 points, while Yasheeka Jones and Jasmine Birdsong each had 14 points.
The 46-point defeat trails only the 84-31 loss to Florida Gulf Coast University in 2006. Florida Gulf Coast was transitioning to Division I status the following year.
