ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Benedict College softball team rallied with four runs in the sixth inning to defeat South Carolina State 6-4 in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday.
South Carolina State got a five-inning perfect game from Raven Johnson in the second game to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 13-0 victory in the second game.
Benedict moves to 5-6 on the season with the split.
South Carolina State led 2-0 after three innings before Benedict rallied to tie the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth inning,
Ruth Ann Simms singled, and a two-base throwing error scored
Victoria Bratton. A two-out throwing error scored another Benedict run in the fifth.
Benedict exploded with four runs in the sixth inning. Three consecutive singles to start the inning scored the first run, with
LaKeeya Ramsey brining home
Victoria Bratton and Simms bringing home Ramsey.
Dyketia Gregg smacked a double to score Simms. Gregg later scored on a groundout.
Ramsey picked up the win in the first game, going the distance and scattering seven hits.
South Carolina State jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning of the second game and exploded with an eight-run fifth inning, while Johnson did not allow a hit or walk in the 15 batters she faced.
Benedict has its home opener on Wednesday against Columbia College. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m.
