Tigers Sweep Three-Game Series From Morehouse

ATLANTA – David Weber hit a home run in each game as the Benedict College Tigers swept a three-game series over Morehouse College to open SIAC play. The Tigers improved to 9-2 overall and ran their winning streak to eight games.

Game 1

Weber went 4-4 with a home run and four RBI's to lead Benedict College to a 12-8 victory over Morehouse in the opener of a three game series.

The Tigers jumped out to a fast start in the first inning, plating four, with RBIs from Chris Moye' and Lydell Moseby. Morehouse would respond in the bottom half of the inning to score four, capitalizing off of walks by starting pitcher Moseby.

Michael Jordan would replace Moseby in the first inning and finish the inning without any further damage. Benedict would take the lead back scratching across another run in the second inning with an RBI single from Weber.

Benedict would add on two more runs in the third inning with RBIs from Christopher Lail and Justin Smalls. They would hold this 7-4 lead until the fifth inning when Morehouse plated a run to make it a 7-5 ballgame.

In the sixth inning, Benedict would expand their lead to 10-5 with runs by Jordan, Robert Jones, and Moye'. Once again Morehouse would respond in the bottom of the sixth with a three run home run off of Jordan to tighten the game up at 10-8.

Weber would add on insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning with a two run home run. Jordan would close the game out with a three-up, three-down seventh inning. Jordan finished the game with six strikeouts giving up four earned runs to pick up the victory.

Game 2

In game two, Benedict would use a strong performance from the pitching staff to collect a 9-2 victory. John Walton would pick up the victory, going four innings only giving up one run.

Benedict would jump out early once again in the first inning scoring five runs, including a two run home run off the bat of David Weber.

From there, Benedict would not look back, adding on one run in the third, one in the fifth, and two in the seventh.

The story of the game was the pitching for Benedict. Luis Cotto would come out of the bullpen to pitch a scoreless fifth, followed by a scoreless sixth by Christopher Lail. Morehouse would scratch across a run in the seventh inning, but Weber would come in and eventually close out the game to give Benedict the 9-2 victory.

Game 3

Weber would homer for a third consecutive game, and pitcher Lamar Lewis would pitch a complete game with nine strikeouts to finish off the sweep of Morehouse 11-7.

Weber would get the Benedict Tigers started early when he blasted a three run home run in the first inning. Andre Collum would also collect an RBI in the inning to give Benedict a 4-0 lead. Jordan would add a run in the second to give the Tigers a 5-0 lead.

Morehouse would storm back in the bottom of the second inning stringing together hits to plate five and tie the game. Benedict would regain the lead in the third inning on a RBI by Dondrelle Folk.

Benedict would extend their lead with a three run fourth capped by a RBI double from Moseby to push the lead to 9-5. Lewis would settle down and hold Morehouse scoreless from the third inning to the sixth inning.

Collum would knock Moye' in to push the score to 10-5 in the sixth. Morehouse would plate a run in the seventh and eighth inning to make it a 10-7 ballgame going into the ninth.

Keith Booker would score an insurance run in the top half of the inning to take the score to 11-7.

Lewis would finish out the complete game with a three-up, three-down inning and seal the weekend sweep for Benedict. The Tigers next game will be a doubleheader Tuesday at home against Elizabeth City.
