COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Tigers erupted for 13 runs in the sixth inning to put away the Clark Atlanta University Panthers 19-5 on Sunday and complete the three-game sweep.
The Tigers stretched their winning streak to 12 games and improved to 13-2 overall and 6-0 in the SIAC.
Clark Atlanta took a 4-0 lead, putting across three runs in the first inning and another in the top of the second before the Tigers plated a run in the bottom of the second.
Lydell Moseby led off the second inning with a walk, and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Dondrell Folk.
The Tigers took the lead with a four-run third inning. With the bases loaded,
Justin Smalls was hit by a pitch to bring in one run. Moseby singled to right field to score two more runs, and
Robert Jones hit a single to center field to score Smalls.
Clark Atlanta tied the game in the top of the fifth thanks to a pair of Benedict errors.
Benedict scored a single run in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead without the benefit of a hit.
Christopher Moye led off with a walk and stole second and third and came home on a fly ball to shallow right field, beating out the throw to home.
Clark Atlanta changed pitchers in the sixth inning, and the Tigers pounced on Clark Atlanta's Manuel Gasper, just as they did on Saturday, when they scored five runs on five hits in one inning. Gasper gave up five hits and four walks, including walking in two runs. Smalls had a two-run double and Moseby had a two-run single.
Lamar Lewis picked up the win on the mound to improve to 3-1. He gave up five hits and four earned runs and struck out three in five innings.
Robert Brown, 0-1, took the loss for the Panthers, who dropped to 1-20 overall and 1-5 in the SIAC.
The Tigers will look to stretch their winning streak with a non-conference doubleheader on Monday against Morris College. First pitch at Capital City Stadium is 1 p.m.
