Lady Tigers Split Doubleheader With Claflin

COLUMBIA, S.C. – LaKeeya Ramsey pitched a six-inning shutout and drove in two runs with a pair of doubles to lead the Benedict College Lady Tigers softball team to a 9-0 victory over Claflin in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday at King Park.

Claflin took the second game 7-2, taking advantage of four Benedict errors.

In game one, Benedict sent 11 batters to the plate in the second inning and scored seven runs. Ramsey led off with a double to right field. With the bases loaded, Asia Benn hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Ramsey. A Claflin error, scoring Ruth Ann Simms. Latishia Wilson walked in Benn and Victoria Bratton hit a two-run single. Ramsey hit her second double of the inning, scoring Wilson and Bratton.

The Lady Tigers closed out the game in the sixth inning on a Claflin error that brought home two runs.

Ramsey gave up two hits, struck out two and issued three walks for the victory.

In the second game, Claflin put across one run in the third inning on an double by Markea Sheppard. Benedict tied the game in the bottom of the third as Dyketia Gregg walked with two outs and later came home on a single by Bratton.

Claflin added another run in the fourth inning and put across two unearned runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Benedict got one run in the sixth on an RBI double by Simms. Claflin pushed across one more run in the seventh for a 7-2 victory.

Ramsey gave up 13 hits and three earned runs in the second game, while walking one and striking out one. Benedict had six hits in the second game, with Melissa Weeks collecting two, including a double.

Benedict is now 15-12 on the season and 8-4 in the SIAC.

Benedict travels to face Clark Atlanta on Friday, before returning home to face Carolina State on Sunday at noon at King Park.
