Benedict Sweeps Softball Doubleheader From Clark Atlanta

ATLANTA – The Benedict College softball team swept a doubleheader against Clark Atlanta University on Wednesday, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh to win 6-4 in the first game, and taking the second game 9-0 in six innings.

The Lady Tigers got a one-out double from Olivia Oxford, moving Ruth Ann Simms, who had walked, to third in the seventh inning. Jasmine Sledge reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Simms to score, while Oxford scored on an error, giving Benedict a 6-4 lead. Benedict got the Lady Panthers to go three-up, three-down in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.

Clark Atlanta scored first in the first inning, putting across one run on a Benedict error. The Lady Tigers tied the game in the fourth when Melissa Weeks reached on an error, moved to third on a single by Simms and came home on a groundout by LaTayvia Mack.

Benedict scored three runs in the fifth inning. LaKeeya Ramsey, Weeks, and Simms hit RBI singles, while Clark Atlanta committed three errors in the inning.

Clark scored one run in the fifth inning, and two more in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4.

Ramsey pitched the entire game, giving up five hits, three earned runs, while striking out five.

In the second game, Benedict scored three runs in the second inning, as Cecelia Lykes hit a fielder's choice that scored a pair of runs and Dyketia Gregg hit an RBI single.

Benedict then scored six runs in the third inning. Oxford hit an RBI double while Sledge brought home a pair of runs with a single. After a pitching change for Clark Atlanta, Gregg hit a two-run single.

Ramsey picked up the win to improve to 14-11. She gave up just one hit in the five-inning shutout, and struck out six and did not issue a walk.

Benedict, now 17-12 overall and 10-4 in the SIAC, is at Albany State on Saturday and at Fort Valley State on Sunday.
