COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Michael Jordan pitched a complete game three-hitter and
David Weber had five RBIs to lead the Benedict College Tigers to a 17-2 victory over Kentucky State in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday at Capital City Park.
Kentucky State jumped out to an early lead and took a 10-6 victory in the second game.
The Tigers struck early in the first game, scoring five runs in the first inning, with Weber hitting an RBI double to score
Lamar Lewis.
Christopher Moye had an RBI single to score Weber. Moye came home on a groundout by
Lydell Moseby.
Lashante Grimes had an RBI single to score
Andre Collum, and
Elisha McDaniel had a bunt single to score Grimes.
The Tigers scored four more runs in the second and five more in the third. Weber hit a bases-loaded triple in the third and Moseby had a two-run single.
Benedict added another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Moseby. The Tigers closed out the scoring with two runs in the sixth with
Christopher Lail getting an RBI single.
Jordan gave up just three hits and one earned run. He struck out six and walked one to improve to 3-2.
Benedict stole 15 bases in the game.
In the second game, the Thorobreds jumped early on starting pitcher
John Walton, scoring four runs in the first inning, including walking in a pair of runs.
Benedict scored one run in the bottom half of the first inning, with Jordan coming home on a wild pitch.
Kentucky State added two more runs in the third inning.
Benedict cut the lead to 6-2 when Collum led off with a double and came home on a single by Grimes.
Kentucky State added one run in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth inning to build a 10-2 lead.
Benedict scored a pair of runs in the sixth when Jordan hit an RBI double and
Lamar Lewis hit an RBI single to left field to score Jordan.
The Tigers added two more runs in the seventh as
Keith Booker drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to score Collum. Jordan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home
Justin Smalls. Lewis was the tying run at the plate, but flew out to end the game.
Walton absorbed the loss, lasting just two-thirds of an inning, to fall to 4-1.
The Tigers, now 17-6 overall and 8-3 in the SIAC, will square off with Kentucky State, 5-16 overall and 4-7 in the SIAC, in the third game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Capital City Park.
