Benedict Splits Softball Doubleheader With Paine

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Victoria Bratton hit a two-out single to center field in the bottom of the seventh inning to score Latishia Wilson and lift the Benedict College softball team to a 2-1 victory over Paine College on Wednesday at King Park in the first game of a doubleheader.

Paine College took advantage of four Benedict errors in the second game to take a 7-1 victory.

Benedict broke a scoreless game in the fourth inning of the first game, pushing across one run on back-to-back doubles by Olivia Oxford and Melissa Weeks. Oxford ripped a hard-hit ball down the left-field line, while Weeks popped a shot into right field to score Oxford.

Paine tied the game in the top of the seventh when Janae Kearse reached on a Benedict error, which allowed Simone Kennedy to score from first base.

In the bottom of the seventh, Wilson reached on an error and advanced to second on a single by Dyketia Gregg. Then with two outs and a full count, Bratton singled to center field for the game-winning run.

LaKeeya Ramsey was the winning pitcher, giving up just two hits, while walking two and striking out four.

In the second game, Paine scored single runs in the first, second and third innings to take a 3-0 lead.

Benedict scored one run in the fifth when BerGearia Major reached on an error and later came home on a single by Gregg.

Paine broke open the game with four runs in the top of the seventh. Paine led off the inning with a bunt single, which was followed by three straight Benedict errors. Kennedy hit a two-run single for the Lady Lions.

Benedict moves to 22-17 overall and 15-9 in the SIAC. Paine is 13-17 overall and 5-17 in the SIAC. Benedict returns to action on Thursday, facing Edward Waters in a non-conference game at 2 p.m.
