COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers sent out their six seniors in style by sweeping Johnson C. Smith University 12-4 and 16-4 on Monday in a non-conference softball doubleheader.
Senior outfielder
Dyketia Gregg went 2-for-5 with four RBIs in the first game, while senior
Melissa Weeks was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and senior
LaKeeya Ramsey also had a pair of RBIs. Senior
Ruth Ann Simms had six RBIs in the second game, while Ramsey had three more.
In the first game, Benedict took advantage of 10 Johnson C. Smith errors in the game to build a comfortable lead.
The game was tied 3-3 heading into the bottom of the second inning when Benedict scored to take a 5-3 lead and padded the lead with four more runs in the third, thanks to a two-run double by Gregg. Two runs in the fifth on a two-out, two-run single by Terea Sweeting, and another in the sixth closed out the scoring for Benedict.
In the second game, Benedict batted around in the first three innings to build a 13-4 lead.
Ramsey brought home a pair of runs with a sharp hit down the left field line in the first inning. Simms brought home a pair of runs with a hit to right field in the second inning. Simms later hit a double to right field with the bases loaded to bring home three runs in the fourth inning to give Benedict a 16-4 lead.
Ramsey (21-16) picked up the win in the circle for Benedict in the first game, while Weeks (4-3) was the winning pitcher in the second game.
Benedict closes out the regular season with a 26-19 record. The Lady Tigers, the second-place team in the SIAC East Division with a 15-11 conference record, will begin play in the SIAC Championship at the Gerald Matthews Sports Complex in Hampton, Ga., beginning on Thursday.
