OZARK, Ala. – Five Benedict College pitchers combined to walk 11 batters, and the Tigers committed six errors as the Paine College Lions eliminated the Tigers 15-5 in seven innings in the 2012 SIAC Baseball Championship on Friday at Eagle Field.
The loss ends Benedict's season at 20-17.
Paine, 26-21, stays alive in the tournament, and will face the loser of Friday night's game between Claflin and Albany State at noon on Saturday.
The Lions were leading 6-3 heading into the fourth inning, when they erupted for eight runs on just two hits. Jonathan Richey was hit by
Luis Cotto, who relieved starter
Justin Smalls in the third inning. Richey stole second and advanced to third when the pickoff throw to second base sailed into center field. Darryl Wilson walked and William Gorman grounded out to score Richey. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases, and the Tigers brought in
Christopher Lail to pitch. A three-base throwing error by
Robert Jones scored three runs for the Lions. The Lions scored four more runs, including another run off an error, before the inning was over with a 14-3 lead.
Benedict was able to score a single run in the fourth and fifth innings, but Paine added a run in the top of the seventh to push the lead back to 10 runs and close the game out early.
The Tigers got an RBI bunt single by
Elisha McDaniel in the third inning,
David Weber brought home a run on a groundout and
Lydell Moseby riped a single into left field to score McDaniel.
Robert Jones singled in the fourth and later came home on a groundout by
Kevin Davis. Weber had a triple in the fifth inning to score
Michael Jordan.
Tyler Padgett had five RBIs to lead Paine. Darren Stokes had three of Paine's 10 hits. The Tigers out-hit Paine 13-10.
