AUGUSTA, Ga. –
Andre Collum went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Benedict College Tigers to a 16-7 victory over Paine College in game two of a doubleheader.
The Tigers suffered a tough defeat in game one as Paine's William Van Winkle hit two home runs to take a 7-3 victory.
In game one the Tigers struggled to score after pushing across one run in the first inning when
Robert Jones reached on a fielder's choice, stole second base, advanced to third on a double by
David Weber, and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Christopher Moye'.
The Tigers' lineup would be shut down for the next five innings, while
Michael Jordan would surrender seven runs to Paine, capped by two home runs by Van Winkle. Van Winkle hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, followed by a three-run bomb in the fifth inning to put Paine up 7-1.
The Tigers would scratch at the lead with runs by
Elisha McDaniel and
Keith Booker in the late innings, but fell to Paine 7-3.
In game two
Michael Jordan would lead the game off with a walk, steal second base, and score on an RBI single off the bat of
Justin Smalls. Paine would respond with three runs in the bottom of the first to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
Collum would put a dent in that lead with a solo homer in the top of the second. Paine would then use a leadoff walk to put across two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the score to 5-2. The Tigers would cut into that lead in the top of the third inning with RBIs from Smalls and
Lydell Moseby.
The Tigers would push across two more runs in the fourth inning as Collum lead off the inning with a walk and scored on a triple from McDaniel. McDaniel would score on a sacrifice fly by Jordan to give the Tigers a 6-5 lead. Paine would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning 6-6.
The Tigers would bust the game open in the top of the sixth inning as Jordan lead off the inning with a single,
Lamar Lewis would bunt for a hit, they would steal second and third base, and score on a single by Weber. The Tigers would then receive RBIs from Moye', Moseby, McDaniel, and Jordan to take a commanding 13-6 lead.
The Tigers would get three more runs in the top of the seventh inning with RBIs from Smalls and Moseby. Smalls would give up one run, but that would be it as he closed the game out. Weber would pick up the victory in the 16-7 win.
