Box Score
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers picked up their first win of the season with a 62-53 victory over Livingstone College on Tuesday at the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.

London Richardson led the way for the Lady Tigers with 17 points, while Dorothy Brown and Jasmine Stubbs each added 13 points. Benedict improved to 1-1 on the season.

The Lady Tigers had a 12-point lead in the second half after Brown hit a free throw with 7:12 left to play. But the Lady Blue Bears came back and cut the lead to four points, 55-51, on a jumper by Ashley Walker with 2:56 on the clock.

But unlike Saturday's season-opener against Armstrong Atlantic State, where the Lady Tigers surrendered a 15-point second-half lead and lost in overtime, this time the Lady Tigers held off the Lady Blue Bears' rally. Neither team scored over the next two minutes, until Benedict's Latoya Fairley hit a free throw with 47 seconds left. Livingstone was forced to foul to try and stop the clock and get back in the game, and Benedict hit four straight free throws to close out the contest.

"That's part of the growing process, learning how to hold off teams and finish the game," Benedict head coach James Rice said. "We did a better job than Saturday's game, but there are still a lot of things we need to work on. Mainly it's the defense and the rebounding. We're giving up too many offensive rebounds."

Benedict outrebounded Livingstone 57-44, but Livingstone outscored Benedict 15-10 on second-chance points.

Benedict also had an advantage from the free-throw line, taking 27 attempts and connecting on 15. Livingstone was 8-of-16 from the free-throw line.

"Today, we emphasized attacking the basket," Rice said. "The other game, we were doing a lot of driving and not kicking and forcing things up and had a lot of offensive fouls. Today, we did a better job of attacking and trying to get to the basket and being more aggressive. That was a big key to our free-throw difference."

Benedict jumped out to an 11-1 lead after a Richardson jumper with 13:41 in the first half. Livingstone scored six straight points to cut the lead to 11-7. Benedict built the lead back to 12 points and then took a 31-22 lead at the half.

Livingstone tied the game twice in the second half, the last time at 35 on a jumper by Diamond Toliver. Benedict then outscored Livingstone 17-5 to build the lead to 12 points, 52-40.

Ashley Walker led Livingstone, now 2-1, with 15 points.

The Lady Tigers are back in action on Thursday, with a road contest against Queens University of Charlotte. The game will be video streamed at http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/queensathletics.portal#
