Box Score COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Clark Atlanta Lady Panthers rallied from a 16-point second-half deficit to upset the Benedict College Lady Tigers 71-70 on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena, preventing Benedict from clinching the SIAC East Division title.
Clark Atlanta's Shavon Caldwell hit two free throws with seven seconds left, and Benedict's
Brittany Jackson missed a layup at the buzzer.
Benedict dropped to 11-3 in the SIAC, 14-12 overall. Clark Atlanta improved to 10-4 overall and 14-10 overall.
London Richardson led Benedict with 20 points, while
Ashley Thompson added 16 points. Conisha Hicks led Clark Atlanta with 18 points and was one of five Lady Panthers in double figures. La'Quisha Lewis had 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
The Lady Tigers forced 30 turnovers by Clark Atlanta, but committed 30 of their own, the second-most of the season. Benedict also shot just 61.3 percent from the free-throw line, missing 12 of their 31 attempts. Clark Atlanta hit 24 of their 32 attempts for 75 percent.
Benedict had a 39-30 lead at the half, after leading by as many as 17 points. In the second half, the Lady Panthers cut the lead to 43-41 on a layup by Hicks, but the Lady Tigers used a 10-0 run to take a 61-45 lead with 9:35 left to play on a jumper by Jackson.
Two free throws by Jackson gave Benedict a 64-50 lead with 7:32 left to play, but the Lady Panthers scored 11 straight points, with Hicks hitting a 3-pointer, two free throws and a layup in that stretch to cut the lead to 64-61 with 5:12 left to play.
Clark Atlanta's Lewis hit a jumper with one minute left to tie the game at 69, and the score remained tied until Richardson hit one of two free throws with 10 seconds left for a 70-69 lead. Caldwell was fouled and hit both of her free throws for the final score.
Benedict still holds a one-game lead on first place in the SIAC East with two games left. Benedict hosts Claflin on Thursday in their final home game of the season.
