Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College baseball team registered two historic milestones on Friday with a doubleheader sweep over Lane College, as the Tigers recorded their 200
th stolen base of the season, and head coach
Selwyn Young won his 100
th game with the Tigers.
Benedict continued its offense onslaught against the Dragons, winning the first game 20-2 and taking the second game 24-2 in a contest that was called early due to darkness. The Tigers improved to 17-2 overall and 8-1 in the SIAC.
With the second win, Young won his 100
th game and was recognized by his team and supporters after the game. Young, in his fourth season with the Tigers, has a coaching record of 100-52.
The Tigers had 18 stolen bases in the first game and 23 in the second game, giving them 210 for the season in just 19 games. In the most recent NCAA statistical report, Benedict led the nation in stolen bases and had five of the top 10 base stealers in Division II.
The second inning was huge in both games for the Tigers. In game one, Benedict scored 10 runs, sending 10 batters to the plate before making an out.
Doren Blake had a two-run homer, and
Justin Smalls followed with a solo shot.
Kevin Davis was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, bringing home a pair of runs on bunt singles. Smalls was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Lydell Moseby had a solo home run in the third inning.
Yaniel Delgado got the win on the mound, going five innings and giving up four hits and two runs while striking out five.
Omar Compton pitched the final two innings and did not give up a hit and struck out three.
Benedict scored in every inning and took advantage of 11 errors for Lane in game one.
In the second game, Benedict scored 17 runs in the second inning, sending 21 batters to the plate.
Daniel Young,
Jan Oyola and Willie Colon each had three at-bats in the inning.
The Tigers had 13 hits in the second game, but only a double by
Jocquese Brunson went for extra bases. Brunson was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Moseby was 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
David Weber was 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs and
Daniel Young was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs.
The Dragons, now 0-12 overall and 0-9 in the SIAC, used five pitchers in the contest. For Benedict,
McCartha Thompson went the distance and gave up two hits. The Dragons scored one of their runs on a solo home run by Blain Dukes in the fourth inning.
Benedict is on the road for five games next week, traveling to Vorhees on Monday and Coker on Tuesday, before a conference three-game series at Stillman on Friday and Saturday.
