Benedict Shuts Out Kentucky State To Advance In SIAC Baseball Tournament

Lashante Grimes
Box Score OZARK, Ala. – Lashante Grimes drove in four runs and three Benedict pitchers combined for a four-hit shutout as the No. 4 East Tigers defeated No. 2 West Kentucky State University 7-0 in the opening round of the 2013 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Baseball Championship at historic Eagle Stadium.

Grimes hit a bases-loaded double to deep left field that cleared the bases in the sixth inning and gave Benedict a 6-0 lead. Grimes added another RBI in the ninth inning with a single to left-center field that scored Kevin Davis, who had led off the inning with a double.

Yaniel Delgado went six innings on the mound for the Tigers, giving up three hits and striking out eight to improve to 9-3. Macartha Thompson worked two innings and gave up one hit, and Christopher Lail closed out the game with a three-up, three-down ninth inning.

Benedict improved to 27-11 and will face No. 4 West Tuskegee in a winner's bracket game on Thursday at 3 p.m. Tuskegee knocked off No. 1 East Albany State in Wednesday's first game. Kentucky State, 14-28, will face Albany State at 9 a.m. in a loser's bracket contest.

Delgado and Kentucky State's starting pitcher Arefes Everette were both cruising along and holding their opponents off the scoreboard, until Benedict opened the scoring in the fourth inning. Lydell Moseby led off with a single up the middle, and David Weber followed with a double to the gap in left-center field to score Moseby.

Benedict added another run in the fifth inning. Wilfredo Colon singled and Grimes walked. The pair pulled off a double steal, and a throwing error by Kentucky State on the play allowed Colon to score.

Benedict kicked off the sixth inning with back-to-back doubles by Weber and Doren Blake to score one run. Elisha McDaniel reached on an error and Colon loaded the bases when he reached on a bunt single. Grimes hit a double over the left-fielder's head, with Blake, McDaniel and Colon all coming home.

Benjamin Schroeder, Kyle Clark, Bryan Berry, and Cornell Brown all had base hits for Kentucky State. Schroeder singled in the third inning and advanced to third on a groundout and single by Clark, who then stole second. But a groundout and a strikeout ended the threat for the Thorobreds.
