Tigers Pound Paine To Stay Alive In SIAC Baseball Tournament

Box Score OZARK, Ala. – The Benedict College Tigers pounded out 13 hits and scored in all but two innings to defeat Paine College 13-6 to stay alive in the 2013 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Baseball Tournament on Friday at historic Eagle Stadium.

Benedict (28-12) broke open a close game with five runs in the top of the seventh and advanced to face Miles College in another loser bracket contest Friday night. Paine (19-23-1) was eliminated from the tournament.

Benedict broke their own NCAA record for stolen bases in a season. The Tigers now have 329 stolen bases for the season, breaking their previous mark of 316 they set in 2010.

Paine scored two runs to take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth and Benedict tied it up with two runs in the top of the fifth. Benedict took a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Young.

But the Tigers took control of the game in the seventh by scoring five runs. Lashante Grimes and Lydell Moseby singled and David Weber walked to load the bases. Jocquese Brunson singled to left field to score two runs. A Paine error allowed two more runs to score and Justin Smalls had a sacrifice fly to score Doren Blake.

Paine cut the lead to 10-6 in the bottom of the seventh as Luis Serrano doubled home William Van Winkle and a Benedict error later allowed Serrano to score.

The Tigers added a run in the eighth as Brunson brought home Grimes on a fielder's choice. Benedict capped off the scoring with two runs in the ninth inning. Justin Smalls brought home Wilfredo Colon with a sacrifice fly, and Moseby had an RBI double.

Benedict scored first as Brunson brought home Davis on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. The Lions tied it in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Serrano.

Benedict took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on an RBI double by Weber, but Paine tied it in the bottom of the inning on another RBI single by Serrano.

Paine took its first lead of the game in the fourth by scoring two runs on a sacrifice fly by William Gorman and an RBI double by Van Winkle. Benedict came back to tie the game on RBI singles by Grimes and Weber.

Van Winkle led the Lions by going 4-for-4 with one RBI. Serano went 3-for-5 and had three RBIs.

Grimes was 3-for-6 with one RBI for the Tigers, while Brunson was 2-for-4 and drove home four runs. The Tigers stole nine bases, with Colon stealing three, and Davis, Grimes and Brunson getting two each.

Omar Compton picked up his first win on the mound for the Tigers, coming in relief and going 3.2 innings, giving up five hits and just one earned run.
