Box Score OZARK, Ala. – Miles College rallied twice to stay alive in the 2013 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Baseball Tournament and knocked out Benedict College with a wild 11-10 victory Friday night at Eagle Stadium.
Benedict had a 7-2 lead after four innings, but Miles scored three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take an 8-7 lead. The Tigers then regained the lead with a three-run homer by
Daniel Young in the seventh inning.
The Golden Bears then scored three runs in the top of the eighth, scoring three runs on a single and controversial error that allowed to more runs to score for an 11-10 lead, then held off the Tigers for the final two innings.
Miles (15-20) advances in the tournament to face Tuskegee, which lost to Stillman earlier in the day, in the loser bracket game at noon on Saturday. The winner of that game will face Stillman, the last undefeated team in the tournament, in the championship game at 3 p.m. on Saturday. If Stillman is defeated in that contest, the deciding game would be played at noon on Sunday.
Benedict wraps up its season with a 28-13 record and finished with a new NCAA record for stolen bases in a season with 333.
Miles scored first, taking advantage of a shaky start from Benedict starting pitcher
Christopher Lail. He hit the first batter he faced, Chase Williams. Williams stole second, advanced to third on an error on the throw, and came home on a wild pitch.
Benedict tied it in the bottom of the first when
David Weber hit a two-out double to left-center field to score
Lydell Moseby.
In the second inning, the Tigers loaded the bases when
Wilfredo Colon was hit by a pitch,
Kurtis Burnett walked and
Kevin Davis reached on a bunt single. With the bases loaded,
Lashante Grimes walked to score Colon. Moseby hit a sacrifice fly to score Burnett, and Weber smashed a deep ball to center field that barely cleared the cinder-block wall to put the Tigers ahead 6-1.
Miles added a run in the third as Gary Mason hit a groundout with the bases loaded to score Austin Freeman.
Moseby brought home another run for the Tigers in the fourth on a double to put Benedict ahead 7-2.
The Golden Bears cut into the lead in the fifth inning. Williams led off with a double and came home on a single by Freeman. Justin Bartley hit a two-out double to score two runs and make it 7-5.
Miles took the lead with three runs in the sixth. Lail hit four batters in the inning and threw a wild pitch, allowing Kelend Smith to bring home two runs with a single. With the bases loaded,
McCartha Thompson came in to relieve Lail, and he walked the first batter he faced to give the Golden Bears an 8-7 lead.
Benedict recaptured the lead in the seventh inning as
Justin Smalls walked and Colon followed with a singled.
Daniel Young followed with a homer over the right field wall to put the Tigers back on top 10-8.
In the eighth inning for Miles, Freeman led off with a single. Kevin Harris hit a grounder to the shortstop, Colon. Freeman was out at second base, but Harris was safe at first on the double-play attempt on a throwing error, and ended up at second. An intentional walk, a fielder's choice to get the runner at second, and another walk loaded the bases for the Golden Bears with two outs. Earnest Harris hit a single into left field to score one run. The throw from the outfield missed the cutoff man and was ruled to have gone into the Benedict dugout on the third-base side, allowing two more runs to score and Harris ending up at third, putting the Golden Bears ahead for good, 11-10. Benedict coach
Selwyn Young protested that the ball only bounced off the cement lip to the dugout, which would have been ruled in play, but after a meeting by the officials, the ruling the ball went into the dugout stood.
