Tigers Split With Paine

Yaniel Delgado pitched a complete game against Paine.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, S.C. – Yaniel Delgado pitched a complete game and David Weber drove in three runs as the Benedict College Tigers defeated Paine College 7-3 to salvage a split of their SIAC baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Tiger Field.

Paine College hit two home runs and won the first game 8-2.

Benedict moved to 19-8 overall and 9-5 in the SIAC.

Delgado improved to 7-2 on the mound by going seven innings and did not allow an earned run. He scattered nine hits, struck out seven and did not issue a walk.

The Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Jocquese Brunson led off with a walk, Lashante Grimes singled and Lydell Moseby reached on a passed ball to load the bases. Weber singled to right field, where the Paine outfielder misplayed the ball, allowing three runs to score. Weber advanced to third on the play and came home on a wild pitch.

In the second inning, Kurtis Burnett singled, then stole second and third, and came home on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.

In the fourth inning, Benedict loaded the bases with three straight walks, then Daniel Young was hit by a pitch to score Grimes. Paine made a pitching change, but the new pitcher, John Hyer, threw a wild pitch which allowed Lydell Moseby to score on a head-first slide to home plate for a 7-1 lead. Paine scored a pair of unearned runs in the sixth to complete the scoring.

In the first game, Paine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning, scoring two runs on a Benedict error. The Tigers came back to tie the score in the bottom of the inning. An error allowed Brunson to score the first run, then Doren Blake singled to score Moseby.

Paine's Chris Johnson hit a two-run homer in the fourth, and tacked on another run for a 5-2 lead. Paine's William Gorman led off the fifth inning with a solo homer to give the Lions a 6-2 lead. The Lions added two more runs in the sixth, on a Benedict error and sacrifice fly.

The Tigers play a non-conference game Monday at Morris, then return home on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader against Vorhees on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
