Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Benedict College baseball team jumped out to an early lead and then had a big five-run sixth inning to take a 10-2 victory over Paine College on Sunday. The Tigers also had a season-high 13 strikeouts against the Lions.
The Tigers improved to 15-8 overall and 3-3 in the SIAC. Paine moved to 16-10 overall and 5-1 in the SIAC.
Benedict jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as
Daniel Young and
Shomarii Thomas had two-out RBI singles. In the second inning,
Andrew McCoy singled, and then with two outs, stole home for a 3-0 lead.
The Tigers took an 8-0 lead in the sixth inning.
David White Jr. led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a Paine error. McCoy hit a bases-loaded single to score two runs and
Armando Valentin followed with an RBI double.
Marcelino Irizarry brought home McCoy with a single.
Paine got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Benedict added single runs in the seventh and eighth inning. McCoy had an RBI single in the seventh and Thomas hit a single down the left-field line to score Young in the eighth.
Robert Troiano III pitched six strong innings, allowing just four hits and striking out 10.
Yaniel Delgado came in relief and allowed just one hit over the final three innings and struck out three.
Benedict is back in action on Monday, hosting Morris College in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Tiger Field.
