John Holleran and
Andrew McCoy had solo home runs and three Benedict pitchers combined for a four-hitter to lead the Tigers to a 4-1 victory over Clark Atlanta in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. Clark Atlanta rallied from a 6-0 deficit to win 12-10 in the second game.
The Tigers moved to 24-12 overall and 7-7 in the SIAC. Clark Atlanta is now 8-30 overall and 4-12 in the SIAC.
Holleran hit a one-out homer to left-center in the first inning. McCoy led off the third inning with a homer to center field.
The Panthers cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth inning. Benedict made it 3-1 in the sixth when Holleran led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. He came home on a double by
Shomarii Thomas. Benedict added an insurance run in the seventh when
Skyler Sabado singled home
Jerome Holmes.
James Roman picked up the win, allowing three hits and one run in 4 2/3 innings.
Yaniel Delgado pitched the final 1 1/3 inning for his fourth save.
Benedict had a 6-0 lead after three innings. Thomas drove in McCoy with a double in the first inning and
David White Jr. followed with a two-run single. White later stole home for a 4-0 lead. The Tigers added two runs in the third when Thomas led off with a solo homer to left field and White followed with another homer to left.
Clark Atlanta cut the lead to 6-3 with three runs in the bottom of the third. Benedict made it 7-3 in the fourth when Thomas hit a bases-loaded single to score Sabado.
The Panthers cut the lead to 7-6 with three runs in the fourth, then took the lead with five runs in the fifth inning.
A Clark Atlanta error allowed two Benedict runs to score in the sixth, and the Tigers added another run on a sacrifice fly by Holleran to cut the lead to 11-10. Clark Atlanta added a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 12-10.
Benedict and Clark Atlanta will finish off their conference series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
