Benedict Men's Track & Field Increases Lead At SIAC Championship

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Benedict College men's track & field team extended their lead after the second day at the 2023 Cricket SIAC Championship on Friday at Morehouse College's Edwin T. Moses Track.
 
The Tigers earned 65.5 points on Friday for a two-day total of 110.5 points and now have a 49-point lead over second-place Morehouse College (61.5 points). Savannah State moved into third place with 41 points.
 
Benedict took first and second place in the men's hammer throw. Chase Ransom won with a throw of 46.53 meters (152 feet, 8 inches). Caleb Vance was second with a throw of 46.10 meters (151 feet, 3 inches). Jacob Darby earned one point with an eighth-place finish with a throw of 34.8 meters (114 feet, 2 inches).
 
The Tigers dominated the men's triple jump. Rajaun Ricketts won with a jump of 14.73 meters (48 feet, 4 inches), while Shun Taylor was second with a jump of 14.12 meters (46 feet, 4 inches). Jeremiah Hall-Jones was seventh with a jump of 13.15 meters (43 feet, 1 ¾ inches).
 
The Tigers had the top two finishers in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Donald Kibet won the race with a time of 9:51.59, while Nelson Kipkemboi was second with a time of 10:07.21. Ryusei Takahashi earned three points with a sixth-place finish with a time of 10:49.92.
 
Corey Witter earned a half point with a tie for eighth place in the men's pole vault, clearing 2.6 meters (8 feet, 6 ¼ inches). Witter also finished fifth in the men's decathlon with 4,898 points to earn five team points.
 
Preliminary heats in four track events were also completed: The 110-meter hurdles, 1,500-meter run, 400-meter run, 100-meter dash, and 4x400-meter relay.
 
Benedict advanced to Saturday's final in the men's 4x400-meter relay race with a blistering time of 3:16.17. The team of Javel Best, Matthew Paul, Jesaiah Jones and Quincy Harris beat second-place Morehouse by nearly two seconds.
 
Saturday's final schedule continues with the men's high jump and javelin in field events, and finals in 10 track events: 100-meters, 200-meters, 400-meters, 800-meters, 1,500-meters, 5,000-meters, 110-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles, 4x100-meter relay race, and 4x400-meter relay race.
