Benedict Baseball Earns Three NCAA Stat Champion Awards

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College baseball team led NCAA Division II in three statistical categories, it was announced by the NCAA.

The Tigers led the nation in stolen bases per game once again. During the 2023 season, the Tigers averaged 5.59 stolen bases per game, easily topping second-place Spring Hill College, which averaged 4.18 stolen bases per game. Leading the nation in stolen bases is not new for the Tigers. Under head coach Selwyn Young, Benedict has been the stolen bases leader for 10 of the past 12 seasons.

Jamell Mitchell Jr. led the nation in stolen bases per game, averaging 1.12 stolen bases per game. He had 36 stolen bases in 32 games. In second place was Tyson Gingerich from Malone University in Canton, Ohio. He had 47 stolen bases in 50 games for an average of 0.94 stolen bases per game.

Also leading the nation was Taj Bates, who had an on-base percentage of 0.567. In 97 at-bats, Bates had 37 hits, walked 35 times, was hit by pitch eight times and had one sacrifice fly. He edged out Jordan Lala from the University of Tampa, who had a 0.566 on-base percentage.

The Tigers went 14-20 in 2023. They will open the 2024 season on Feb. 17 at home against Lane College.
