Tigers Seventh After First Round Of PGA Minority Championship

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – The Benedict College men's golf team stands in seventh place out of nine teams after the first round of the the 26th PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship presented by Brown Capital Management.

The first day saw the competitors battling blustering winds, only 13 Division II players broke 80, including Benedict's Jordan Buchanan, who led the Tigers with a 78.

Anthony Wik had an 83, while Kelly Willis, competing in her second men's tournament, had an 89. Eddie Smith III had a 94.

With a team score of 344, Benedict trails Paine College and Winston-Salem State by three strokes. Those two schools are tied for fifth with a 341.

Fayetteville State shot a 12-over 300 for the first round lead. Lincoln University is second with a 313, followed by Virginia State University (317) and Morehouse College (319).

Virginia State's Stephen Genchi shot a 70 for the individual lead.

The Championship features nearly 180 players representing over 40 colleges and universities. The 54-hole championship concludes Sunday.

The PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship presented by Brown Capital Management, which will celebrate its 26th edition this year, originated in November 1986 following the Jackson State University Golf Tournament and has elevated golf in minority colleges and universities by providing opportunities to more players to compete in a national championship.

In 2006, The PGA of America was granted complete ownership and management of the championship by the National Minority Collegiate Golf Scholarship Fund. In 2008, the Championship featured a record number of participants, with nearly 200 students from 47 schools, with representatives from 14 countries.
