AUSTIN, Texas – Benedict College cross country and track & field standout
Haregot Gebreyesus has been named to the 2016-17 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Gebreyesus was selected to the third team and becomes the third student-athlete in Benedict College history to earn Academic All-America® status, joining Cecelia Lykes (softball, 2015) and Shane Latchman (men's tennis, 2015).
Gebryesus, a sophomore from Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, carries a 3.94 GPA as an electrical engineering major.
One of the top distance runners for the Tigers, he finished third in the 2016 SIAC Cross Country championship. At the 2017 SIAC Track & Field Championship, he finished second in the 10,000 meter run and 3,000 meter steeplechase and third in the 5,000 meter run. He finished sixth in the 2015 SIAC Cross Country Championship. At the 2016 SIAC Track & Field Championship, he finished third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, the 5,000 meter run and the 10,000 meter run.
The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2016-17 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
Twenty-three of the 45 members of the 2016-17 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II Men's Track & Field/Cross Country teams have at least a 3.90 G.P.A., with six student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. The 15 members of the first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.88.
The 2016-17 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II Men's Track & Field/Cross Country teams consisted of 11 student-athletes who made repeat appearances on the team, including two student-athletes who received their third appearance on the list.
