Benedict College Athletics

John A. Johnson played for Voorhees Jr. College for 2 years prior to coming to Benedict College. He was recruited by Coach Red Jackson weighing at 257 pounds. He played Offensive tackle and nose guard. While he was at Voorhees, the football team was EIAC Champions 2 years running. 

In 1962, Voorhees was National Junior College Championship Participants. He brought that championship spirit to Benedict College as captain of the tigers football team in 1964 and 1965. His skills at drive blocking and lead guard was evident with the production of some great running backs; and Benedict has a history of producing great running backs. Sometimes we forget about the guys in the trenches, doing the necessary blocking in order for others to perform well. Now it is time for recognition to be given to the man in the line who so often goes unrewarded. In the sixty's 257 pounds was considered a big man.

The same drive and desire to excel that John Johnson learned on the football field has enabled him to became commissioner of New York State Office of Children and family services. His accomplishments are many and exemplary. He has been married to his wife Aloma for more than 30 years. He is the proud parent of two   daughters and grandparent of Nigel, his first grandchild.
