    Coach Michael Steward, a former instructor/counselor (1978-89) and track and field Coach (1980-93) for 13 years is a native of Columbia, South Carolina. After receiving his Bachelor's degree in Health and Education in 1976 and his Master's in Rehabilitation Counseling in 1978 from South Carolina State University he became a freshman seminar instructor/counselor at Benedict College in 1978. Two years later he became the new track coach for Benedict College. Steward maintained his coaching position at Benedict College for 13 years from 1980-1993. While at Benedict he was very successful as he won several awards such as NAIA District 6 Track and Field Championship (5 Girls - 2 Boys). EIAC Track and Field Championships (5 Girls - 4 Boys) and he won the the coach of the year 6 times for District 6 in the NAIA, and 5 times in the EIAC conference.
Coach Steward is currently teaching and coaching at Lower Richland High School and his maintained his success as a coach on the high school level. He won the girls class 4A South Carolina State Championship in 1995 and he was the runner-up in 1997. In 1995, he was named South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association Track and Field Coach of the Year and South Carolina Track and Cross Country Association Girls 4A Coach of the Year . He also became a member of the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards and the National Board of Certified Teacher-Physical Education in 2003.
Coach Steward has been married for 30 years to the lovely Althea Lynn Steward of Darlington, South Carolina.,
